A little bit about me . . ..

Picture
Natasha Martins graduated with a Bachelor of Science and Post Graduate Diploma in Dietetics from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal in 2004.  Following graduation, Natasha worked for a year as a community service dietician at Dundee Provincial Hospital in northern KZN.  It was during this year that she developed a keen interest and passion for infant and child nutrition.  In order to pursue this passion and further her studies, Natasha moved to the United Kingdom in 2006.  During her time there, Natasha worked as a Paediatric Dietician at various hospitals in and around London (namely Lister Hospital, Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, Hertford County Hospital, Guys and St Thomas' Hospital and Ealing Hospital).  In addition to her hospital duties, Natasha worked as home enteral feeding dietician, conducting home visits and clinics at various special schools.  Natasha received further training in infant and child nutrition, by being fortunate enough to attend the British Dietetic Association Paediatric Module and Neonatal Nutrition Course.

Natasha returned to South Africa in 2008 and worked as a Principal Paediatric Dietician at Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg until
May 2010.   During her time at Grey's Hospital, Natasha was responsible for the paediatric dietetic service and provided specialist dietary advice to the neonatal ICU, paediatric ICU, paediatric medical and surgical wards and outpatient clinics.  Natasha was a previous member of the KZN Provincial Clinical Working Group. In 2009, the group developed the national guidelines on the “Use of Ready-to-Use Feeds in the State Sector”.  Natasha was a previous member and coordinator for the WHO 10-Steps for the Treatment of Severe Malnutrition Program at Grey's Hospital.

Natasha's passion for paediatric nutrition and enriching the lives of children through proper nutrition, has prompted her to start her own practice in KZN.  Her aim is to work together with parents to promote the healthy diets of infants, toddlers and children. Natasha strongly believes in a multidisciplinary team approach and working together with doctors, nurses, speech therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists and physiotherapists to provide holistic care.

Natasha’s main passion is neonatal nutrition and ensuring premature infants receive the most appropriate and meticulously calculated nutritional intake to meet their requirements, ensuring adequate growth.  Natasha also has a keen interest in infant feeding under 1 year of age (including the promotion of breastfeeding and appropriate introduction of complementary foods) and food allergies.

In addition to her private practice, Natasha works part time for the dietetic department at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal and  as a locum dietician at Life Entabeni Rehabilitation Unit.  Natasha is committed to continual professional development and keeps up to date by attending study days and congresses, researching emerging nutritional literature and reading newly published journal articles.

Natasha is a member of the Association of Dietetics in South Africa and the Health Professions Council of South Africa and the United Kingdom.
